New Dojinshi Reviews (comments appreciated)
Hi guys, I’m back with one of my much anticipated reviews!! After about a year of taking a break, I’ve once again updated my collection, and I’m done studying each in detail. The topic for now is dojinshis again, fan comics of the anime series Gundam Seed and the sequel, Gundam Seed Destiny. To start this off, I would just like to comment on the fact that ALL the GS dojinshis are in original Japanese text. I have searched high and low, and I have yet to fund one in English :( So, if anyone knows a place where you can get a GS dojinshi in English, please to tell. Us fans got to help each other. Or maybe your interested in translating? I can clear the text balloon, and we can co-translate it. 50-50 credit, of course!! Well, that’s about it, I should probably get started with the review. Right now, I’ve got 18 of 23 GS dojinshis (that I know of) and I’ll be honest, most are awful. But don’t get me wrong, the stories, the scenes… its all nice, but these aren’t the Sunrise people. So don’t expect the characters to look as good as they did in the anime. Thankfully, some are actually quite good, its hard to imagine that they weren’t created by the original artist.
The best would be GSD DamDam (yeah, I know, the name in crap. I thought long if I were to download this or not, after seeing the title only. But as the saying goes, don’t judge a book by its cover!) This one features Lacus and Flay, with appearances of the other character. (Kira fans, I don’t suggest this manga. They killed him 4 panels in. LOL But it is needed in the story flow.) As most will expect, Flay is as psycho as ever. Way more psycho this time. Poor Lacus has to be on the receiving end of Flay’s bitch fit. Lacus fans would initially say, “F*** you Flay! Damn you BITCH!!! (I would know, I did too at first) But a true dojinshi fan will overlook this, and see outside the box. Sure we hate Flay, but then again, it’s easy to shut her out, right? Beside, she stays fully clothed through the entire scene, so it’s a piece of cake to cut Flay from the scene. That makes it way easier to love Lacus the more!! I admit, I stared, and when I say stare, I mean eye-hurting STARE! The expressions, the positions, the events itself; it’s so good I really recommend this, even to non-GS fans. This should be included as one of the best short dojinshis of all. ITS SO DAMN GOOD!!!
Then there’s GSD Lacus Soushuuhen Destiny. The art here is INCREDIBLE. In fact, this only loses to DamDam by a half point, due to the non-originality of the plot. But Lacus is HEAVENLY!! Patrick Zala, the first male lead, is also drawn accurately, although I don’t really give a damn. As the plot goes, Athrun, Yzak and Rau Le Crueset also make their appearances, and the drawings are also good, but again, I don’t give a damn. Flay comes out somewhere in the later parts, but she’s seriously disproportioned. In short, this is mainly a Lacus Dojinshi. And I say this again, Lacus here is AWESOME!!! Writer’s Pick!!
Would GS Destiny be complete without the hot Meer Campbell? That’s why I was so sure a dojinshi like GSD Meersan Desutte ne! would come out. This story happens right before GSD’s Phase 21: Roaming Eyes. It tells of what “supposedly happens” before Athrun woke up, and Lunamaria barging in. (well, according to the artist) There’s a lot of exaggeration, and a ton of stereotypes, suggesting that this artist was either still new, or bored. His censors are poorly done, his facials are wrong, and his gaping hole is just too much. Most are still acceptable (except his hole, dammit, dude, it would have come out way better without that) and Meer and Athrun are done nicely.
Not to be outdone, the original Pink Princess also has her version, GSD Lacussan Desutte ne! It’s the usual Lacus Kira pairing. Good artwork, average facials, but the plot is boring. It’s the usual couple’s scene, with the usual order of events. This kind of flow is so natural to me, I could almost tell what’s going to happen next. Another comment is that this also has a gaping hole scene, just not as obvious, but still. Anyways, still a fine catch, and it has this kawaii ending too :)
Next up is GS Ark Angel. (crap title again). This time, the stars are Murrue and Natarle, with Neuuman as and extra. There’s also a Kira Cagalli scene at the end. (though only 4 pages) The art here is pretty good too, and the plot is so unique, I was like O_O at first. But it’s still cool, a really good piece of work.
Another good GS dojinshi is GSD Edition (omote). It’s got a Lacus Athrun pairing, and the story is good. What makes this stand out is the rare internal shot about half way though Lacus and Athrun’s scene together. Its small, and only one, but its still there, and the rendering is exceptional. The squirt, the splashing, the overflowing, each detail is very accurate. Unfortunately, the beginning is sort of boring, and waste of pages, and they don’t really play an important role in the plot. They even have this joke on Tolle (dude, corny!!) Proportions are also wrong, but unless you’re a perfectionist, its acceptable.
Last for now is a Cagalli dojinshi, GSD Cagalli Mark Three. This is a very good Cagalli manga, and she gets lots of fun in this story. (it’s stories like this that make me wish I was a girl, seriously. Girls, consider yourselves lucky. Us guys can only dream of fantasies like this. I envy you all.)
